The XpressPads technique is a meticulously thought-through finger drumming technique that was designed from the ground up with a clear set of rules. It takes all the logical relationships there are between your hands, finger motions, pad controller hardware and drumming technique itself into consideration. Thereby, you do not only achieve the best-sounding results possible, but you also maintain the most natural and most ergonomic playing feeling possible. I firmly believe it is the most effective and easiest-to-learn finger drumming technique available today.

Absolutely not! No prior musical experience whatsoever is required. Simply follow the steps described in the courses and you can’t go wrong. The XpressPads courses were basically written while the technique was developed. This approach makes sure that no single step in the learning journey is missing. That’s why I can confidently say that you will have no problem learning finger drumming. It starts very easy based on a step-by-step learning concept, introduces simple notation once appropriate and takes you step by step through the basic, intermediate, advanced and extreme concepts. Don’t worry! You can make it!

XpressPads covers a wide age group, however it isn’t really designed for very young kids, that’s why it is suggested to start no earlier than the age of 14. The pad controllers and groove production studios this finger drumming technique was developed for have an almost standardized pad section size. This requires a minimum finger length and width that very young kids simply don’t have.

This pretty much depends on your personal ambition and training time. You will achieve good-sounding results very quickly and stunning results even after very few weeks. However, while it is nice rushing quickly through a course and absorbing it all in almost no time, it is important to get the basics learned thoroughly so that you can later on always trust your own capabilities. Therefore expect a few to a couple of months until you feel playing confidently in an extraordinary way. 20-30 minutes per day of true practice time will make you progress rapidly although you might enjoy it so much that you will end up practicing much more than that.

That’s rather a question of your overall studio / live setup and how far you want to make it with the XpressPads technique. I personally favor a pad controller in combination with a virtual drum module installed on my computer. This combination provides me with full flexibility. Furthermore pad controllers cost less than groove production studios and that might matter to you if you come to the “Xtreme” stage of this course where you can enjoy playing incredible grooves with two pad controllers.

In order for the XpressPads technique to work best in conjunction with your pad controller or groove production studio, you should carefully check the spaces alongside the pad section. Buttons placed closely to the pad section are generally not an issue, however, be aware of knobs placed close to the lower two horizontal pad rows – especially those below and left or right to these rows, as those can make it difficult to play a few finger drumming techniques sufficiently.

The virtual drum module or drum sample library you choose should at least provide you with a high quality acoustic drum kit that has several velocity layers for each drum and cymbal. Furthermore, it is important that the virtual drum module allows you to map the drum sounds to the pads of your controller in a way that matches the XpressPads layout. Most modern virtual drum modules like Superior Drummer, Addictive Drums, or Steven Slate Drums offer these features.
